How to Repair a Failed Power Adapter (Teardown and Component Replacement)

Moderate 5 steps

Tools *Spudger (Espátula de apertura) *Multimeter (Multímetro) *Soldering Iron (Soldador) *Solder Sucker or Desoldering Wick (Desoldador) *Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (Alcohol isopropílico) *Wire Cutters (Cortaalambres) "This guide will walk you through the process of opening a sealed power adapter and identifying common points of failure, such as blown electrolytic capacitors or faulty switching ICs. Many power adapters fail due to aging capacitors, and repairing them is often more sustainable than buying a new one. Warning: Power adapters contain high-voltage capacitors that can retain a lethal charge even after being unplugged. Proceed with extreme caution." Symptom The power adapter does not deliver output voltage (0V), preventing charging or operation of the connected device.

Tools

  • Multímetro digital (con función de prueba de diodos y continuidad)
  • Soldador de estaño
  • Bomba desoldadora o malla de desoldar
  • Destornillador de precisión (para abrir la carcasa)
  • Wire Cutters/Side Cutters
  1. 1

    Step 1

    • Step 1: Desoldering the faulty diode Locate the HSR3150 diode on the board. It is located in the low voltage zone (near the output cable). Apply heat with the soldering iron to the diode legs and use the desoldering pump or mesh to remove the tin. Remove the diode from the board carefully.
  2. 2

    Step 2

    • Step 2:The original diode (HSR3150) is a 3A, 150V Schottky (DO-27/DO-201AD encapsulation). Successfully used replacement: SR5150 (5A and 150V Schottky). Compatibility note: The SR5150 supports more current (5A vs 3A) and the same voltage (150V). The DO-201AD package is physically identical to the DO-27, so it will fit perfectly.
  3. 3

    Step 3

    • Step 3: Solder the new diode Insert the new SR5150 diode into the holes in the board respecting the polarity (the diode stripe must match the screen printing mark on the board). Weld the legs along the back of the plate and cut off the excess sideburn.
  4. 4

    Step 4

    • Step 4: Check and Assemble Before closing the case, plug in the adapter and measure the output voltage with the multimeter. You should get a stable reading close to 27V DC. If the voltage is correct, disconnect the adapter, reassemble the case and you can use your device.
  5. 5

    Step 5

    • Additional Notes If after changing the diode the source still does not start, check the DP2543 control chip (integrated with 7 legs in the primary area). If your internal MOSFET is shorted, the chip will also need to be replaced. Make sure the new diode has the same orientation as the original (the stripe indicates the cathode).

To put it back together

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
